C0 DWR
We would like to talk to you about forever chemicals, PFAS, specifically used on outerwear. In the 1950s a combination of chemicals named C8 PFOA was used to create a very Durable Water Repellant (DWR) coating. It was a water, stain and fire repellent, a real marvel. Our relationship with the great outdoors changed forever. We were able to weather storms like old explorers.
This PFAS DWR was and is indeed durable. It doesn't break down, ever. It causes serious health risks to humans, animals and everything wonderful in our world.
In 2015 C8 was replaced with C6, as effective, still PFAS, still caustic. C6 is on most outerwear.
In 2018 a fluorine-free and PFAS-free DWR,C0became available. Not the "teflon" of it's toxic forefathers but it's forever chemical free. It is a decent water repellent but not stain repellent. It's worth noting that since it's waterproofness is affected by oils like those on human hands.
We committed to only using C0 PFAS-free DWRS materials in 2019. Our whole mission is to make quality, sustainable gear to support a more a sustainable lifestyle. Our size allows us to be fast on our feet and to react swiftly. We're always making choices to be design forward, stay independent and small. This allows us to be tightly connected to every aspect of production.
Truth is, we've never relied simply on a DWR. The design of our garments as always been focused on construction that minimizes cutting and sewing which is less opportunity for water to find a way in. We use materials with denser weaving that optimize natural repellency. We use a PFAS-free membrane on the inner side of the fabric for water protection even if the fabric begins to saturate the outside.
We have been experimenting with some old and new chemical-free materials. We have some pretty nifty ideas that we are eager to we can share in the upcoming months.
Our hope is that some very bright scientists will find ways of removing PFAS. In the meanwhile we are removing it from our products.
As always, please feel free to reach out, we truly appreciate feedback, questions and suggestions.
*C6 PFAS is still available but regulatory changes are being put in place. France's ban on PFAS DWRs began January, 2026. Most other European countries, Canada and a handful of US states have bans starting in 2027-2030.
